Hoya Pubicalyx 'Chinese Black'
This product is sold out
The Hoya pubicalyx is a species that has been in cultivation for ages, your Grandma probably even had a few. That doesn't mean they're old lady plants though! A very easy and rewarding species to grow, they will continue to produce tiny pairs of leaves along their vining stems that get larger and larger until they are full size.
The Chinese Black produces leaves with a dark red to almost black tinge when grown in strong light. They also produce cricket ball shaped umbels of tightly clustered, star shaped black flowers that are highly fragrant.
As a general rule, let the top 2-3cm of soil in the pot dry out before watering again in the growing season (Spring and Summer). In the colder months let them dry out much more before watering again. They are highly drought tolerant plants due to their waxy leaves and the photosynthetic pathway they use, so if your unsure hold off on the water.
Position and Lighting
Like most Hoyas they can handle shade but if you want them to flower, and believe me, you want them to flower they need very bright light. A north facing window is the perfect position for most Hoyas.
They will be between 20 to 50cm tall when they are delivered but will climb much higher. When they get a bit more advanced you can take stem cuttings. These will give you more plants as well as encouraging the original plant to branch giving it a bushier habit.
