Sinningia leucotricha is a weird and wonderful bulb native to Brazil. It grows in the wild on rocky cliff faces and is often found amongst ferns and species of jungle cacti. It has aruably the most beautiful foliage if all the Sinningia with leaves that are covered in silvery-white velvety hairs that you just want to caress. These beautiful leaves are produced on white furry stems that sprout from its caudex (water storing bulb).

It produces red to orange tubular flowersthat are pollinated by Hummingbirds in the wild (but probably not in your home).

Watering

These beautiful plants like regular watering, like once or more per week throughout the growing season (whilst they are producing leaves). When watering make sure that you water the soil only and not the plant as they can be prone to fungal infection because of their beautiful furry foliage.

Like many caudex plants these lovely ladies have a dormancy period through winter where the stems will wither and die back. During this time you can cut off the dead stems and occasionally mist the surface of the soil to prevent the caudex from drying out to much. Resist the urge to water properly until you start to see new shoots arising from the caudex.

Position

An easy plant to care for, it likes bright indirect light but will tolerate more shade. It is happy in a humid spot but will also do well in less humid positions.

Managing growth

At present these plants are approximately 10cm tall with a 2-3cm caudex. They are a moderately slow grower and remain happy in their ceramic pot for a number of years, eventually they will have to be repotted though as the caudex will outgrow the pot. Mature plants 20+ years old can reach a caudex size of up to 30cm across and will throw up many stems making them truly spectacular specimens.
