This large leaved beauty is becoming more and more popular in cultivation for it's spectacular leaves and hardy nature. These guys are native to the lower Congo and surrounding areas of western Africa. In the wild it is found growing as a small to medium sized tree in lowland rainforest, gallery forest and savanna woodland. They are an evergreen fig with large glossy leaves (10-25cm accross) that are oval to elliptic in shape with a prominant midrib and lateral veination which can give them a ruffled appearance. Due to the varied environments they have evolved in these beuties make excellent and extremely adaptable houseplants.

Plant size

Currently these plants are approximately 30-40cm tall with 10-15cm leaves.

In they wild these beauties can get to over 6 metres tall, in cultivation they will remain happy in a small pot for a number of years. They are likely to reach 2 metres indoors. Once they become potbound it is a good idea to pot them up. Just make sure they have a free draining mix.

Fitting your Ficus umbellata to a pot

These plants are shipped in a 1.5L nursery pot that is wrapped in a calico bag to keep the soil in during transport. They will fit any pot from our Classic Pot Range. Don't worry about the shape, we sort that out for you based on the ceramic you choose!

Watering

Water when the top few centimetres of soil in the pot has dried out. Like their cousin the Fiddle Leaf Fig they like to stay evenly moist but they are quite tolerant of drying out from time to time. Reduce watering in the winter months.

Position

They love bright indirect light, but as they have adapted to life in the rainforest understory they can handle a bit more shade. Like most figs they wont tolerate frosts but they are fairly cold tolerant and will handle temperates down to about 5 degrees C and even the occasional drop below this.

Fig Owners Guide

Although it’s unlikely your pets will eat the plant unless you keep their natural pollinator the Fig Wasp as pets, it is mildly toxic to your more curious of furry friends.

Our special eco packaging

No Plant Stress

Our plant packaging is designed by people know how to keep plants fresh and healthy in transit. Your plants will enjoy a comfortable trip directly from our greenhouse to your door in just a few of days. Your plant will not have to deal with the stress of being bare rooted for transport (how most plants are sent) and you won’t have to deal with the mess and fuss of potting up your new plant when you receive it.

Stability Support

The plastic pot will be wrapped in a calico bag to keep the soil in place, it will then be tied into a specially designed cardboard insert which will keep it stable and upright throughout its journey. The insert will be glued in place on top of your cardboard wrapped ceramic pot to hold it down and your plant up!

No Re-Potting

Your plant will come in its plastic pot which we make sure fits perfectly in whichever ceramic pot you choose. Our packaging has been designed to allow us to send your beautiful ceramic pot along with your plant, fully potted, yep in soil, together in the same box.

Fully Recyclable

The thing that we’re most proud of is that our packaging is fully recyclable and re-useable so you don’t have to feel bad about generating more packaging waste. In fact you should feel awesome because ordering from us, online, will generate way less emissions than if you were to drive to the nursery to buy a plant. The only plastic you get will be the plastic pot that your plant comes in and these can be re-used or recycled.
