Another dodgy dude with a name that is different to what it is (like the Madagascar Palm). This guy is actually a Cycad but has been commonly named a Cardboard Palm due to its superficial similiarities to many palms.

A native of Southeastern Mexico that has become very popular as both a houseplant and a landscape plant due to their sculptural form and incredible toughness. Leaves approximately 50-150cm long radiate out from the centre of the trunk. Each leaf has between 6-12 pairs of matte-green, pubescent (hairy) leaflets that have a similiar texture to stiff cardboard.

If you were wondering what this plant would be like in a salad or you just wanted to know what eating cardboard is like stop wondering because they're super poisonous to both humans and pets.

Caring for your Cardboard Palm (Zamia furfuracea)

Position

They love bright indirect or full sun so near a north-facing window is great. They will tolerate a little bit of shade but keeping them in deep shade for long periods will eventually kill them. Also they don't like frost so keep them indoors or on a covered deck if you live in a frost prone area.

Managing Growth

They are very slow growers when young so they will be happy in the same pot for a few years. Once they mature they will grow more quickly but will reach a maximum size of only 1m tall x 2m wide.

Watering

Water when the top few centimetres of soil in the pot has dried out, usually once every 1-2 weeks. Make sure their soil is free draining as they don't like to sit in water.

Our special eco packaging

No Plant Stress

Our plant packaging is designed by people know how to keep plants fresh and healthy in transit. Your plants will enjoy a comfortable trip directly from our greenhouse to your door in just a few of days. Your plant will not have to deal with the stress of being bare rooted for transport (how most plants are sent) and you won’t have to deal with the mess and fuss of potting up your new plant when you receive it.

Stability Support

The plastic pot will be wrapped in a calico bag to keep the soil in place, it will then be tied into a specially designed cardboard insert which will keep it stable and upright throughout its journey. The insert will be glued in place on top of your cardboard wrapped ceramic pot to hold it down and your plant up!

No Re-Potting

Your plant will come in its plastic pot which we make sure fits perfectly in whichever ceramic pot you choose. Our packaging has been designed to allow us to send your beautiful ceramic pot along with your plant, fully potted, yep in soil, together in the same box.

Fully Recyclable

The thing that we’re most proud of is that our packaging is fully recyclable and re-useable so you don’t have to feel bad about generating more packaging waste. In fact you should feel awesome because ordering from us, online, will generate way less emissions than if you were to drive to the nursery to buy a plant. The only plastic you get will be the plastic pot that your plant comes in and these can be re-used or recycled.

Shipping

Please note, due to quarantine restrictions on plants and soil, we are not able to deliver plants to WA, NT and TAS.
