Anthurium Decipiens is a relatively newly described species from Colombia. It is an exceptionally interesting, very large growing Anthurium producing massive, dark green leaves with red leaf venation that fades as it matures. The leaves are slightly leathery and bullate (bubbly) along the leaf veins. Leaves emerge bright red from pinkish-red sheaths.

It was once thought to be Anthurium Salgarense however a number of subtle (and not so subtle) differences has led to it being reclassified as its own species. One not so subtle difference is the rank smell produced by the flowers which are though to be an adaptation to attract certain fly pollinators. Don't worry though cultivated plants have never been recorded to produce this smell which is part of the reason why it has been confused with A. Salgarense.

    Caring for your Anthurium Decipiens

    Position

In the wild these plants grow in wet forests at very high altitudes (1300-2000m) which likely makes them relatively cold tolerant (not frost) but less tolerant of extreme, dry heat. A cool, humid area is best for them. In their natural habitat they prefer bright filtered light and are found growing mostly on steep creek banks and road cuttings.

    Managing Growth

They are currently about 20cm tall with 13cm leaves.

These plants can eventually reach 3m tall with leaves over 1.5m long. Although this is unlikely in cultivation they will still become very large, striking feature plants over time.

    Watering

Like most Anthuriums these beauties should be grown in a very open medium consisting of mostly orchid bark. Water regularly in the warmer months, allowing the media to partially dry between watering. Water less in the cooler months to replicate the tropical dry season.

    Our special eco packaging

    No Plant Stress

Our plant packaging is designed by people know how to keep plants fresh and healthy in transit. Your plants will enjoy a comfortable trip directly from our greenhouse to your door in just a few of days. Your plant will not have to deal with the stress of being bare rooted for transport (how most plants are sent) and you won’t have to deal with the mess and fuss of potting up your new plant when you receive it.

    Stability Support

The plastic pot will be wrapped in a calico bag to keep the soil in place, it will then be tied into a specially designed cardboard insert which will keep it stable and upright throughout its journey. The insert will be glued in place on top of your cardboard wrapped ceramic pot to hold it down and your plant up!

    No Re-Potting

Your plant will come in its plastic pot which we make sure fits perfectly in whichever ceramic pot you choose. Our packaging has been designed to allow us to send your beautiful ceramic pot along with your plant, fully potted, yep in soil, together in the same box.

    Fully Recyclable

The thing that we’re most proud of is that our packaging is fully recyclable and re-useable so you don’t have to feel bad about generating more packaging waste. In fact you should feel awesome because ordering from us, online, will generate way less emissions than if you were to drive to the nursery to buy a plant. The only plastic you get will be the plastic pot that your plant comes in and these can be re-used or recycled.
